The 2024/25 pantomime season kicked off in fine style in the village of East Coker, just outside Yeovil. Direct by Holly Robson, this show encompassed the best of community theatre with its inclusivity and warmth of feeling, as the audience drifted in chatting merrily and enjoying the odd seasonal snifter. Their version of Sleeping Beauty was traditional pantomime fare and all the usual characters were there. But, kudos to East Coker, they managed to include many quirky twists. So the Dame had a full beard, the three fairies sported taffeta dresses complete with leather biker jackets or gilets, and the eponymous baby was delivered by a very funny stork that wandered in through the audience!
This was a funny show with plenty of gags, some local and topical references and a cast who looked as though they were thoroughly enjoying themselves. And there were one or two wonderful songs. With lovely costumes, some great make up, well-crafted sets, a variety of props and live musical accompaniment, this was a true team effort. It was a full house on the Friday evening I was there, although it was a shame there were no kids in the audience, and I am sure the camaraderie and general bonhomie will have put each and every person in the audience in the mood for a wonderful Christmas time!
